I remember spending countless hours watching my sister play Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo. She could beat the whole game, while I could barely get past the 2nd level. My streak of losing ended when I started playing duck hunt. Why was I able to play so well–the gun controller. It was so fun to have a different controller than the regular one that came with the console. Nintendo has come a long way from those days. There are all sorts of different controller that are specific to a game. It makes the experience of playing much more real. This is definitely the case with the assortment of Nintendo Wii controllers now available on the market.

Mario Party 8 (Wii) $17.99 Crazy minigames, board game lunacy and more surprises than you can shake a Wii Remote at are all here in force in Mario Party 8, the first in the series to appear on Wii. Every character you could expect to see in the game is here – Yoshi, Peach, Mario and the rest – along with new faces Blooper and Hammer Bro, who previously appeared for the first time in the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES. A hyperactive MC has invited the crew to his carnival which appears at first to resemble nothing much more than a board game. However, at the end of each turn, each player is faced with a nifty mini-game. These games utilise the Wii Remote's motion, pointing and button control in a variety of ways. This really is the perfect game to play against friends and family thanks to the multiplayer mode which allows you and your friends to team up against each other in both two versus two and one against all challenges. Willing players can watch a tutorial that shows them what to do with the remote so no-one feels left out. Mario Party 8 also includes four more minigame-infused kinds of special games, such as Tic-Tac Drop, where players earn the right to put the next mark on the board by winning a minigame.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii) $14.99 Once bitter rivals, 2007 saw Mario and Sonic star in the same video game for the first time as they went to the Olympic games in Beijing. After that game's success it doesn't take a genius to realise that it was only a matter of time before our plumber and hedgehog heroes got together at the Winter Olympics, and that's exactly what they are doing next, to celebrate the 2010 Vancouver Winter games. As with the last M&S Olympic outing, our two icons are not alone, they have brought a selection of characters from their adventures along too. Mario's team has Luigi and Yoshi, obviously, but there are also Princess Peach and Donkey Kong, too. Sonic has enlisted Tails, Knuckles, Amy and MetalSonic to help him in his attempt to lift Olympic Gold. Your favourite characters, controlled by you, will take part in a feast of party games themed on the Olympic events like snowboarding, skiing, speed-skating and ice-hockey. There are also Dream Events, which are a little less rooted in reality. Gameplay is controlled by WiiMote and Nunchuk. The Wii Balance Board may be used to control some events, such as the bobsleigh. When two players co-operate at the bobsleigh event, working in harmony fills your “Teamwork” Meter, and you gain a boost of speed. The gameplay is good old fashioned Wii Sports style competitive party gaming. In Adventure Tour story mode, you can play as Mario or Sonic in a mission-based adventure to save the Snow Spirits and The Games themselves. Once again history is being made, because while Mario and Sonic at the Olympics saw our two heroes in the same game for the first time, they were competing with one another. In Adventure Tour, for the first time in history, our famous rivals become allies to work towards a common purpose.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii) $14.99 It's not often that we get a piece of real, bonafide history in gaming, but this qualifies. Two of entertainment's once most heated rivals have teamed up to appear (along with their mates) in one game. A game tied, no less, to the Olympics' first outing in China. As you might expect, various Olympic events taking the form of minigames are the order of the day. You're given a choice of many characters from the Sonic and Mario universes – Yoshi, Shadow, Tails, Peach, Luigi and Eggman are just some of the faces you'll be able to play; each with their own set of statistics. As with Mario Kart, there are heavyweights, speed types and skilled characters that all have various abilities. The games on offer are split up into categories, so all the track races such as the 100m and 400m are available under 'Athletics' while Javelin and Archery are listed under 'Shooting'. They're played using the Wii Remote and nunchuk in various arm-tiring ways to allow players to prove just who is the best from the two icons' respective worlds. If the harsh reality of real Olympic events gets too much, there's another style of minigame on offer. While all the other games are set in the official Beijing stadium, and played by Olympics rules, Dream Events are set in fantasy worlds that best befit our furry and pudgy title mascots. They involve surreal events that give you the opportunity to take 10,000 metre dives and duel in the jungle. It's certainly not a case of history repeating.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) $14.99 One small step for Mario, one giant leap for Nintendo… Actually, that's not entirely true. Mario makes some pretty impressive leaps, too. 'How?' we hear you cry! Well, if the title didn't make it obvious, Nintendo has taken Mario into space. Zero gravity would make you jump pretty high, too… Some nasty folks have had away with Princess Peach and made off with her into space. Fortunately, Mario has found himself able to follow, so off he trots… well, flies. That's the plot. 'Nuff said. The real leap here, of course, is from the tried and tested controller to the Wii's remote and nunchuck combo. You can use the Wii Remote as a pointer at virtually any, um, point in the game, collecting small stars from the ether and firing them back at enemies or obstacles. But that's only the most basic incorporation of remote control that Mario Galaxy has to offer. With intuitive use of Remote movement, Mario can also spin, roll, shoot fireballs, catapult himself, tractor-beam himself through zero gravity areas, and do other things that you'd be better off finding out independently . In boss fights, too, Wii Remote movements are used for the delivery of attacks and killer blows while the Nunchuk's analogue stick controls Mario's basic movement. Happily for long-time Nintendo fans who were beginning to suspect that Nintendo had given up entirely on producing real games with real gameplay challenges, Galaxy is not easy to complete. The trick Nintendo Tokyo has pulled here is quite an ingenious one: Galaxy gives you all the moves you'll ever need and makes sure that it's perfectly easy to use every last one of them, but then it takes the liberty of pushing Mario to his outer limits through a long string of stages that appear to have been designed by madmen. There's something of The Prisoner about it: you're trapped in a pretty messed up place where nothing is ever quite what it seems, and you find yourself in ever more bizarre situations. In comparison, looking back, the level design in Super Mario 64 is tame. So, as we said, one giant leap for everyone…

Mario Sports Mix (Wii) $34.99 Mario has always been a bit of a sportsman. Which kind of defies his portly figure really, but he’s taken part in quite a few activities all the same. Football, baseball, tennis, golf… in fact, there isn’t a lot that the Nintendo mascot hasn’t done. Mario Sports Mix on the Wii aims to check almost every other outdoor activity off the list, in a move that seems a bit like fast-tracking the things to do before you die. These four games are guaranteed to provide hours of fun with friends though – volleyball, basketball, ice hockey and dodgeball have all been given Super Mario-themed twists and settings to make it all a little less boring. As you would expect from past Mario sports titles the rules of each game largely remains the same, but in Mario’s world you can collect coins to build up bonus points, use Koopa shells to attack your opponents and use other iconic special items to mix the action up a little bit. That’s to say nothing of the signature moves that each character has. From Luigi to Yoshi and everyone inbetween, if they get riled enough to use one of these special attacks, you can be sure that you’re not stopping them. And then you have the environments – DK Dock will make the volleyball court slide from left to right, while Bowser Jr Blvd’s basketball court feature bonus circles that offer good (and bad) rewards. With co-operative modes for up to four players and competitive two-on-two matchups, Mario Sports Mix is going to be the ultimate in Mushroom Kingdom Sports Entertainment.
